Gate passed away Sunday morning at the age of 89 at his care home in Pierrefonds after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, his four children by his side. He will be mourned by Brenda, Diane, Bill and Richard; by his enormous extended family and countless friends across Canada and far beyond; and by those in aquatics whose teaching has been guided by Gate’s innovative, influential hand.

A regional swimming champion in his native England, Gate arrived in Canada in 1947, having seen wartime action with the British Royal Navy in the North Atlantic, Pacific and in British convoys to Russia.

He would put his stamp on swimming from the logging outpost of Ocean Falls, B.C., in the 1950s and early ’60s, to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association from 1964-66, to the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre for the next three decades, first as head coach at the the new pool, then for 30 years as the city’s aquatics director.
