The Pan Pacific Trials have concluded in Montreal and after four days of racing at Claude Robillard 22 swimmers have been named to the Canadian Pan Pacific Team. 

Congratulations to coaches Randy Bennett, Jan Bidrman, Tom Johnson, Benoit Lebrun, Byron MacDonald, Paul Midgley, Jozsef Nagy, Marc-Andre Pelletier, Nicholas Perron, John Rodgers, Erin Russell, Derrick Schoof and Claude St-Jean, for placing their athletes on the Pan Pac team. 

Swimming Canada will hold a second trials competition for the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria from July 28-31, 2010. During this meet the team will be filled to the maximum team size of 52 swimmers. Coaches will be selected at a 1:5 coach to swimmer ratio based on FINA point rankings.

Some quick highlights from the meet:

  1. Ryan Cochrane's win in the 1500 freestyle was the fastest time done in the world this year
  2. Brent Hayden's win in the 100 freestyle was the second fastest time in the world this year
  3. The women's 200 backstroke (Lauren Lavigna / Genevieve Cantin), 400 IM (Alexa Komarnycky / Tanya Hunks) and 200 breaststroke (Annamay Pierse / Martha McCabe / Ashley McGregor) were the only events to have at least two swimmers under the FINA 'A' standard
  4. In the women's 200 backstroke the top four swimmers all finished under the FINA 'A' standard
  5. The men's 200 backstroke was one of the closest and most exciting races of the championships with the top 3 swimmers (Matt Hawes, Charles Francis, Nicholas Sinclair) finishing within twenty one one-hundredths of a second (0.21)
  6. The women's 200 breaststroke saw three swimmers under the FINA 'A' standard (Annamay Pierse, Martha McCabe and Ashley McGregor)
  7.  Multiple winners included Brent Hayden (50 / 100 free), Victoria Poon (50 / 100 free), Ryan Cochrane (400 / 800 / 1500 free), Annamay Pierse (100 / 200 Breast), Alexa Kormarnycky (400 / 800 free, 400 IM)
  8.  Katerine Savard is the youngest swimmer on the Pan Pacific Championship team at 16 years old.
